What Does Sitting Really Do to Your Body?

The answer is nothing good

We all know by now that sitting is bad for us. But do you know just how bad it is? Sitting for extended periods of time can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Additionally, sitting can cause back pain, neck pain, and poor circulation. It can even shorten your lifespan.

So, what can you do to combat the effects of all that sitting? For starters, try to stand up and move around for at least a few minutes every hour. If possible, walk around or take a short walk outside. And when you are sitting, be sure to sit up straight and avoid crossing your legs, which can further contribute to poor circulation. Additionally, try to take breaks from looking at screens every 20 minutes or so to give your eyes a rest.

While all of these things can help, the best way to reduce the health risks associated with sitting is to simply sit less. Make an effort to stand up and move around as much as possible, and your body will thank you. Try getting a standing or supine desk, because yes, even lying down is better for your body than sitting. And if your posture is off due to the compounding effects of sitting over the years, consider trying out a posture correcting challenge like the one I am undertaking this month.
