Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a mental disorder characterized by a lack of empathy and disregard for others. People with ASPD often violate the rights of others, lie, and cheat. They may be aggressive, impulsively risky, and have difficulty maintaining relationships.

People with ASPD are often referred to as “sociopaths” or “psychopaths”. The disorder is distinguished from sociopathy by its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnosis, which requires the presence of three or more symptoms from a list of seven.

ASPD is estimated to affect about 1% of the general population. It occurs more frequently in men than women, and among people with substance abuse problems or a history of conduct disorder. People with ASPD often have a history of legal and interpersonal problems. The disorder can lead to social isolation, unemployment, and financial difficulties.

ASPD often co-occurs with other mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Treatment for ASPD typically involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy.

There is no one cause of antisocial personality disorder. Rather, it is thought to be the result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Genetics may play a role, as the disorder is more common in people with a family history of ASPD. Environmental factors that may contribute to the development of ASPD include child abuse, neglect, and exposure to violence.

There are many resources available to help people with ASPD, including support groups, therapy, and medication. Treatment can help people with ASPD manage their symptoms and live healthier, more productive lives.

If you or a loved one are struggling with ASPD, there is help available. Treatment can be effective in managing the symptoms of the disorder and improving functioning.
